It’s all about balance, baby.
Last week I wrote a post about how I switched up my routine and attended my first actual yoga class. Well, I am happy to say that I marched into Prana Yoga in Miami on Monday and signed myself up for boat load of classes. Since then I have made it a point in taking a class whenever I have a free morning from work (which thankfully has happened a lot this week).
The Past
Yoga is something I have been contemplating for over a year. It all started back in 2009 when I was very ill while away at college. I started doing some yoga in my dorm room right before bed and for months it was the only thing that would calm me down enough to sleep.
Unfortunately, between my random 4 month illness and finishing school, yoga took the backseat (Apparently Naples, FL is not conducive to such activity). When I came back from my post grad trip to Europe severe anxiety over my past, present, and future quickly ensued.
So I tried some yoga again. Mostly just by following videos and doing some research. It worked, but it ended up taking a backseat to life again once I started spending every waking hour either teaching or writing.
The Present
Now, a few months into my new job and a little more financially stable, I plan on taking time for myself to regroup and let go.
A couple of mornings ago I attended the most basic class this place had. During the last pose (savasana aka corpse pose) the instructor must have sensed I had a little extra tension building up. She came over, did something to my forehead, and I was instantly transported into a realm of relaxation. IT. WAS. AWESOME.
Later on she mentioned how I was pretty tense, to which I simply replied, “Tell me about it. I’ve got years worth of pent up frustration in this body.”
And it’s true. I do. Everyone does, obviously. But I have a tendency of holding on to anger.
Somewhere in my subconscious I probably still hate some bitch who stole my lollipop in kindergarten.
The worst part is that I know I put up my own mental blocks, I just don’t know how to stop them.
So, I decided that I need to do something for myself and started taking my yoga practice more seriously. I can’t spend every waking hour of the day working because we all need balance. I also can’t hold on to hurt anymore because it’s exhausting.
It’s only been about a week since I started taking yoga more seriously, but I can already feel that it’s having a positive impact…at least physically. I assume mentally comes with time.
Some of My Favorite Yoga Blogs
The Everything Yoga Blog - The title says it all. This yogi fell in love ten years ago and has never looked back. She runs a blog and a yoga therapy business in the pursuit of helping others.
Yoganonymous - Great articles and FABULOUS music mixes. (Did I mention the MP3s are free?)
Is Yoga Legal? – I particularly like this blog because I feel like I can relate to its author. You know, trying to find the balance between tranquility, self, and work. Her latest post really spoke to me.
YogaDork – The fun side of yoga in an adorable, cheeky, and clever blog.
The Business Yogini -The entire concept behind this blog is just incredible! The author aspires to help women with their entrepreneurship endeavors “yogini-style” . Her posts are inspiring, especially for women like me who feel they may have the chops for running their own business.
Prana Journal – One man’s journey about how yoga helped him cope with depression and any adventures he has along the way.
Yoga Journal – From the beautiful magazine comes an equally beautiful blog for every yogi, whether they are newbies or experts.
Random Bites
In other news, I’m officially 23. Unfortunately I had to work all day on my birthday; but I will be doing some major celebrating this weekend. And my family did surprise me with an adorable cake when I got out of work
I also picked up the Dalai Llama’s The Art of Happiness. Coincidentally, a recent student of mine suggested that I read it right after I saw this INCREDIBLE documentary on Tibet. I’m also a philosophy freak (I was one class shy of a philosophy minor in college) and after so many years of studying Western philosophy I would love to learn about others.
Don’t worry, once I am done with it I will definitely share with a giveaway
Speaking of giveaways, there is still time to enter the Life After College Book giveaway! If you haven’t done so already, you may want to see a video where I gush about the book and it’s author, Jenny Blake.
And speaking of Jenny Blake, I attended her FABULOUS webinar for Brazen Careerist entitled Your Career In the Age of the App where she discussed side hustles, time management, and gen y career moves. No wonder she made it to my list of Top 7 Helpful Interviews for Jumping into Entrepreneurship!
