In today’s day and age it is difficult to stand still. During the work day alone you can get bombarded with emails, text messages, alarms, meetings, notifications, and IMs which makes it exceedingly difficult to just breathe and enjoy your surroundings. Don’t get me wrong, technology is a fascinating thing and I love my Blackberry, but I can’t help but notice that people are always frazzled by the amount of stuff going on in their lives. So what’s the solution when you are up to your eyeballs in stress? Stillness.

Pause During Your Day

The next time you feel utterly overwhelmed by life just stop everything you are doing. Turn off your phone, close your email, and shut the door. Now just sit there and pay attention to your breath for a few minutes.

This may seem like inaction, which we have been taught is a bad thing. After all, time is money and money pays the bills. Inaction is just passive and lazy, right? Wrong. A little inaction in the middle of your work day can bring a mountain of benefits to your health, productivity, and overall wellbeing.

Being still calms the body and the mind. It allows a person to have a small oasis of quiet in order to regroup. Most importantly, stillness is the antagonist of the daily stress that takes over our lives.

Sit still for a few minutes everyday that you can. Your thoughts will probably come rushing in about how unproductive this all seems. Ignore them. Ignore every thought that comes to mind and just learn to be still. With time it will become easier to quiet your brain.

Pretty soon you will be able to notice what a difference this makes in your mood and the moods of others around you. Stillness has a domino affect that way.
