My First Actual Yoga Class and 3 Reasons to Switch Up Your Routine

I went to my first actual yoga class today with my best friend.

I mean, sure, I do some at home, but following a video is not the same as attending a group setting where an incredibly chipper and funny instructor can stand on your calves if need be.

The reality is that I wanted to try something new. Something different. So, I took advantage of the fact that I had the morning off and signed up for a basic Iyengar class near my job.

(Iyengar yoga primarily focuses on the technical physical aspects of yoga and is often referred to as the physical therapy yoga. I am mostly just fascinated by details so I thought it would be an interesting class.)

I’d been saying I wanted to try a class for weeks for weeks, so I went carpe diem for the day instead of sleeping in.

3 Reasons to Switch Up Your Routine

1. Switching up your routine every once in a while is a great way to feel alive and present.

Sometimes we can get a routine so ingrained in our system that we’re almost like robots. How many of us spend out lives waking up, going to work, going to sleep, and repeating the process? Shake things up a bit and watch how quickly your life gets a little more interesting.

2. Switching up your routine can get you out of a rut.

Similar to my former robot analogy, too much of the same thing puts us in a rut. Life becomes boring and predicatable and as a result we become completely unsatisfied. We start saying things like “Life would be better if x, y, and z” or “I wish I had time to do x.”

Guess what, you are 20something so if anyone has time is you. Embrace your youth while you’ve still got it.

Which brings me to my third point…

3. You cannot recouperate time. Embrace the moment and try something new.

How many times have you heard older generations start a sentence  with ”If I were young again…” ?  Do yourself a favor and don’t be one of those people.

If there is something you have been wanting to do, be it bunjee jumping or starting a business, there is no time like the present. Every day you spend wishing instead of doing is a day you have wasted.

4.You never know where it might lead.

Thanks to this mini adventure I had this morning, my best friend and I are starting a new tradition. Every couple of weeks we will take time out of our busy schedules and take a yoga class together for some bonding.

I also learned that I get a free class on my birthday next week :)

My point is that you never know where trying something new might lead you. You could easily make new relationships, strenghten old ones, or just find something you really enjoy.

How are you guys going to switch up your routines? What are some things you’ve always wanted to try? Feel free to share :)

I found your blog through the yoga board on 20 something bloggers. I have been doing yoga for almost 6 years but I’ve never taken a class. You have inspired me to find a class in my area and try it out! I’ve always wanted to try Hot Yoga, so I think I’ll give that a try (if I can find a class).
