How to Take a Step Back and My Case for Doing Nothing

8 Mar 2011 by Amanda Abella, 2 Comments »

I had a rough week at work last week. Not only because the hours I was putting in, but because of a bad case of the flu that quite literally knocked me on my ass. This of course was not including my moonlighting freelancing endeavors because I didn’t even have the energy to speak much less write up intelligent sounding articles.

Then there’s this week which hasn’t been so rough at work and has even allowed me some free time. I figured I would take the opportunity and write up some assignments, except I have failed epically. The inspiration just isn’t there. The words aren’t coming out and I am more motivated to watch an episode of The Vampire Diaries than I am to write an article about Easter crafts.

While explaining my lack of motivation to my father he gave me some great advice. You see, my father used to work in an architecture firm as a drafter, a job that requires some serious creative juices. He basically told me that whenever he wasn’t feeling any inspiration it meant he needed to step back and do something else.

So that’s exactly what I’m doing. My articles will get written when they get written and I would much rather produce quality content than rush to make some extra cash. After all, life doesn’t have to be (and damn well shouldn’t be) all about work.

Besides, as I have said many times before, we need rest. Arianna Huffington actually gave a great talk on the importance of rest in a world of sleep deprived workaholics. Now, if this crazy busy and successful woman can figure out when she should sit back and kick it, then so can we.

Love this article. Sometimes the brain just gets so overworked you need to let the engine cool down before trying to rev it up again.
