As a 20-something trying to find her place in this world, I have noticed that I and other 20-somethings suffer from a severe case of ”Grass is Greener” syndrome. In other words, we find ourselves saying “My life would be better if x, y, and z happened.” In my case it would be moving, a boyfriend, and being able to magically make a more than comfortable living with my writing.
Obviously, these things take a lot of work and dedication. But sometimes we lose sight of the present because we’re too busy focusing on what our lives could be like. For instance, I spent far too long brushing off Miami as a piece of shit, expensive, no good for work city where you’re lucky if you find someone who speaks English. I got down in the dumps over my low paying teaching job with crazy hours, the fact that financial independence isn’t coming soon enough, and that trying to juggle two sources of income, both of which don’t have fixed hours, is at times completely maddening.
Recently I tried to shift my focus and fall in love with my hometown again. I live in an incredible city and am lucky to run into people from all over the world. I’m also reunited with my family and childhood friends and actually have a pretty cool job that allows me to learn from others as much as I teach them. And hey, in such a crappy economy I should be on my knees thanking God for my job.
I also started taking some more time for myself, so that I can work out the stresses from the week and relax. After a hiatus (which only lasted 2 weeks but it seemed like an eternity) I have tried to carve out time to work out again. I have also carved out time to get pampered every week at an inexpensive membership spa that I found through a friend. When you’re working crazy hours like I do a mani/pedi once a week is like therapy.
I’m also trying to focus more on the present and what I can do right now in order to make progress in achieving some of my goals. I know it won’t be easy but I’ll be damed if I settle for anything less.
