Self-love is a hot topic in the personal development world. It’s also something I see on a daily basis among coaching clients, coaches in my classes, job candidates and even my own friends and family.
It would seem as if society has a lack of self-love. This in turn stops us from going after what we really want in life. It stops us from going after a promotion, starting a business or asking someone out on a date. Our lack of self love stops us dead in our tracks and let’s fear in.
This week make it a point to start practicing self-love with five steps I created to help get you there.
From Wikipedia:
Self-love is the love of oneself.
In 1956 psychologist and social philosopher Erich Fromm proposed that loving oneself is different from being arrogant, conceited or egocentric. He proposed that loving oneself means caring about oneself, taking responsibility for oneself, respecting oneself, and knowing oneself (e.g. being realistic and honest about one’s strengths and weaknesses). He proposed, further, that in order to be able to truly love another person, a person needs first to love oneself in this way.[1]
Amanda’s 5 Steps to Self-Love
1. Own it – Whether it’s good or bad, own it. Give yourself credit when credit is due and don’t live in denial of your flaws.
2. Forgive and let go – This is a big one. As soon as you forgive and let go you open the door to some wonderful things to come into your life. I’ve been practicing this on a daily basis and had a wonderful experience once I truly forgave some people who had hurt me.
3. Make the conscious decision to think positively – Our brains seem to be on auto-pilot for negativity. Remember that happiness is a choice and you can do some mental conditioning on a daily basis.
4. Do something you love – Schedule something you love to do into your week.
5. Reflect – Take time to sit with yourself and reflect on what’s going on in your life.
Of course, cultivating an attitude of self-love is a habit. Take it little by little and soon enough it will become second nature.
Enjoy your week everybody!
