Yes - credit cards can be a big risk - but there are certain things you really can't purchase without one (eg. plane tickets, online travel reservations)... Many credit card companies will issue credit cards to college kids but not to similarly situated people outside of a university. I went through this when I graduated - made it out into the real world, got a decent job, went to the bank for a credit card and was declined...for having no credit vs. bad credit. Which was ironic, since I worked for a credit card company at the time. The funny part? After getting dragged through the mud for a $500 credit card, I was offered an upgrade to a $5000 gold card by the same bank three months later.
